Tragedy chanting causes ‘unbearable pain’ and must stop – Margaret Aspinall

The Premier League has joined forces with former Hillsborough Family Support Group chair Margaret Aspinall to highlight the pain and upset that tragedy abuse can cause.

Aspinall, whose 18-year-old son James was one of the 97 people who lost their lives at the Hillsborough disaster in April 1989, has participated in a video to explain the hurt caused by tragedy chanting and urged people to report any incidents.

An in-classroom lesson is to be made available to more than 18,000 primary schools and 60,000 teachers in England and Wales and outline to children the significant distress such abuse creates, and comes in the aftermath of Sunday’s Premier League match between Luton and Liverpool.

The Premier League strongly condemns all forms of football tragedy abuse an…

Erik ten Hag’s side need to sign a new striker this summer even if Cristiano Ronaldo stays. Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are good forward players, but neither of them is particularly good at playing down the middle as a number nine.

Crystal Palace have announced the signing of Mathieu Flamini until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old midfielder was a free agent after being released by Arsenal in July, ending his second spell with the north London club.

Crystal Palace is a very ambitious club with great players and I am looking forward to being part of that squad, Flamini, who will wear the number four shirt, said in a statement on the club website.

Man Utd announce big losses with recruitment plans ´ahead of schedule´

Manchester United football director John Murtough says the club are ahead of schedule with their recruitment plans as they posted big losses for the 2021-22 season.

United lost £115.8million last season, despite revenues rising by 18 per cent to £583m.

The club s debt rose from £419.5m in 2021 to £514.9m this year, an increase of more than 22 per cent, while transfer activity saw wages leap by 19.1 per cent to £384.2m.

Murtough says such an outlay was necessary, after a sixth-place finish in the Premier League last term saw United miss out on C…

Ancelotti rejects claims Madrid enjoy Champions League ´luck´

Carlo Ancelotti has rejected claims Real Madrid have been fortunate in recent Champions League campaigns, insisting you have to do everything well to prevail in Europe.

Ancelotti led Madrid to their 14th European crown last season, and Los Blancos have made a perfect start to their Champions League defence, topping Group F following wins over RB Leipzig and Celtic.

Madrid repeatedly defied the odds en route to last season s triumph, losing a match in each of their first three knockout ties (against Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City).

But speaking ahead of Wednesday s clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, Ancelotti – the only coach with four European titles to his name – said fortune can only take a team so far.

I always want to win the Champion…

Foden cannot imagine playing for anyone but Man City

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden wants to spend the rest of his career with the club and cannot imagine playing anywhere else.

Boyhood City fan Foden came through the youth ranks and served as a ball boy at the Etihad Stadium before breaking into Pep Guardiola s first team as a 17-year-old.

This season he is enjoying an increasingly prominent role in Guardiola s plans and made his senior international debut with England.

Last month s 5-0 win at West Brom was Foden s 100th appearance for the City first team and, ahead of Sunday s crunch clash with champions Liverpool at Anfield, he told BBC Football Focus he is in it for the long haul.

I can only see myself playing for Manchester City, considering how much I ve supported them from a young age, he sai…

Tottenham´s fighting spirit key to Champions League progress, say Lloris and Lenglet

Hugo Lloris and Clement Lenglet commended Tottenham s desire after a comeback victory over Marseille sealed a place in the Champions League last 16.

Spurs headed into Tuesday s game at Stade Velodrome knowing a point would be enough to put them through, but Chancel Mbemba s goal in first-half injury time saw them staring down the barrel of an early exit from UEFA s elite club competition.

Yet a much-improved second-half display resulted in Antonio Conte s side getting the job done in style, through Lenglet s header and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg s late finish.

It meant Spurs advanced as group winners for the third time in their Champions League history, and captain Lloris believes the team deserve plenty of credit for the comeback.

We expected that type of ga…

No excuses if we fail to win UEFA Super Cup – Chelsea boss Lampard

Frank Lampard says Chelsea are desperate to win the UEFA Super Cup against Liverpool on Wednesday and will accept no excuses if they fail to get their hands on the trophy.

Lampard s reign as Chelsea boss got off to a disappointing start on Sunday, with the Blues slipping to a heavy 4-0 defeat to Manchester United in their Premier League opener.

They have an immediate chance to bounce back, however, when they take on Jurgen Klopp s Champions League winners in Istanbul.

Lampard has been on the losing side twice as a Chelsea player in Super Cup finals [against Atletico Madrid in 2012 and Bayern Munich in 2013] and says his side will be giving everything to defeat their domestic rivals.

I ve had two great examples of a really important game that you don t wi…

Icardi: I left Inter for PSG to win trophies

I came here to play, Icardi told Canal+. If you arrive with an option to buy, you know the player has to give his best to ensure the club decides to purchase him outright. We ll see what happens next summer.

I was in my seventh year at Inter and my dream was to play in the Champions League with Inter, which I did last season, but we never won anything.

I thought the time had come for me to go to a winning club, one that could challenge for and win titles. It s time for me to start winning.

The truth is that PSG is a squad full of champions and that is what I wanted.

Icardi made his debut in PSG s 1-0 win over Strasbourg on September 14 before starting in last week s memorable 3-0 Champions League victory against Real Madrid.

However, the Arge…

He was aggressive but complimentary – Redmond corroborates Guardiola claims

Nathan Redmond corroborated Pep Guardiola s claim that he was simply praising the winger s talents when the pair appeared to exchange words after Manchester City s last-gasp win over Southampton on Wednesday.

City scored a late winner in the 2-1 triumph at the Etihad Stadium thanks to Raheem Sterling s stunning goal, but much of the attention after the match was on another incident.

Guardiola was seen appearing to confront Redmond after the full-time whistle, acting aggressively towards the winger, which he later insisted was only him showing his admiration for the Saints midfielder.

Reports began circulating on Thursday that Guardiola had actually aimed foul and abusive language at Redmond, who felt the need to step forward and corroborate the Spaniard s recolle…
